Volunteer Project in Bolivia

Description:
This project in Mallasa, in the periphery of La Paz, is a community centre/nursery for local indigenous children aged six months to four years. Most of the children in the community come from poor backgrounds, and the project provides them with both educational and health services. In doing so, not only do the children receive education, but it also enables their parents (especially the mothers) to find employment outside their homes and improve their financial circumstances. In order to help parents to find employment, the project provides training on how to obtain a job. Another type of training the project offers to the parents is on good parenting and non violence.
Activities:
An example of the kind of tasks you may be asked to perform include:
- Playing and undertaking creative activities with the children – dance, music, sports
- Helping with educational activities, drawing, painting, maths, language and writing skills
- Helping to serve and clean up at meal times
- Helping to prepare meals
- Keeping classrooms tidy
- Accompanying children to the bathroom, washing faces, brushing teeth etc.
- Participating in cultural activities
- Gardening and general maintenance of the nursery
Requirements:
To work at this project we are searching for volunteers with the following requirements:
- Basic level of Spanish
- Enthusiasm
- Capacity to deal with emotional situations
- Love for children
- Adventurous
- Health and fitness
- Volunteers will be asked to provide two references
Minimum:
Work Schedule:
The nursery is open Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. Volunteers can choose to work full days or only mornings.
Spanish:
As very few people in Bolivia speak English, we recommend that you at least make sure to have a basic level of Spanish before starting at the project. The higher your level of Spanish, the more you will get out of your experience, as you will be able to make friends and interact with local people both in the project as outside. During the project, there is a possibility to follow one-to-one Spanish classes in the local village.
